Full or Part Restoration

We carry out full 'chassis-up' restorations and have successfully completed dozens over the past 35 years. However, sometimes a part restoration is all that is needed to bring your classic back to its former glory and this approach brings savings in time and money. We are more than happy to carry out either. Also, some owners of a practical nature like to complete some of the restoration work themselves, using our services just for the parts that require specialist skills & equipment. For example, an owner may wish to complete the re-assembly of his/her car after we have completed the bodywork and painting areas of the project and perhaps got the car running and MOT'd as well. Again, we are happy to work with you on the project.

Servicing & Tuning

An annual service, often accompanied by an MOT test, is essential for keeping your classic car in top condition. Our servicing is traditional and thorough. We use the original service specification to ensure that, for example, all grease nipples are re-greased, drum brakes are cleaned and adjusted properly, points-and-condenser ignition system are adjusted correctly and multiple carburettors are rebalanced correctly. If your classic has only done a few hundred miles in the preceding year, we can carry out a 'light' service where, for example, the spark plugs are just cleaned & re-gapped rather than renewed etc. This saves unnecessary expense. Even if your classic is exempt from having an MOT test, it's a good idea to have one anyway. This gives you documentary proof that it was in good sound roadworthy condition at the time of the test.

Engine & Gearbox Rebuilds

We rebuild all engine and gearboxes, including overdrive units. Engines are always rebuilt to unleaded specification whenever possible, to be fully compatible with modern petrol. We can tune engines to Fast Road, Stage 2, etc. if desired. Older engines have white metalled main and big end bearings, side valves, 'wet' liners, etc., all of which we can restore. Sometimes hidden improvements can be made also; a popular one is to replace the original 'rope' crankshaft oil seals with modern 'super seals' to cure a main source of potential oil leakage.

Rewiring & Retrimming

We have full in-house facilities to cope with all your rewiring and retrimming needs. Often a classic's wiring loom just needs local repairs; however, if a full new loom is needed, we are able to obtain one for the vast majority of classic cars. Many old looms were cotton braid covered (instead of the more modern plastic covering) and this we are also able to replicate. Retrimming is a vital part of the concluding phases of many classic restoration projects. We can retrim seats, trim panels & door cards, renew carpets & underfelts and fit replacement hoods. There is usually a variety of different materials available in each case and we'll work with you to make sure you make the best choice for you and your car.

Bodywork Repairs & Resprays

The bodywork forms the main structure of your classic car and it is vital that it is sound and correctly aligned before any paint is applied. Our bodywork repairs include the removal of ALL parts of old rusty panels that are being renewed. (This is vital to prevent the recurrence of rust problems & to achieve good panel alignment.) When new panels are needed but are not available, we have the skills and equipment to make new ones to pattern. We also have the necessary skills & equipment to deal with the ash frames on older cars and aluminium panels. We work with various well-chosen long term sub-contractors for our resprays and fully guarantee the end results. Spraying can involve the whole car or just a few panels. We mostly use 2-Pack paints these days as the supplies of Cellulose have almost completely dried up.

Re-Chroming

We work closely with our well-chosen long term chrome plating subcontractor to ensure that all re-chroming is of the highest quality. Sometimes chrome items are damaged or rusted; our subcontractor strips the chrome (and other) layers off first, we then expertly repair the steel from which the item is made and then it is re-chromed. The high quality end result always sets off the completed restoration perfectly.

Chassis Restoration on Jig

Older classic cars have a separate steel chassis beneath the bodywork. It is vital that this component is sound, strong and correctly aligned; after all, it is the 'foundation' on which the rest of the car is built. We usually completely strip the chassis down and shot blast it: This reveals all the (often hidden) problems. We then mount it on our jig, triangulate it to assess its trueness and commence our repairs using steel of equal or greater strength than original. We always ensure that our repairs are as invisible as possible – usually completely so. After repair, it is primed and painted ready to be used as the 'foundation' of the subsequent restoration.

MOTs

Even if your classic is exempt from having an MOT test, it's a good idea to have one anyway. This gives you documentary proof that it was in good sound roadworthy condition at the time of the test. Why would you need this? Well, should an accident befall your precious car, insurance companies will always inspect the roadworthiness of it. This is a standard procedure that they do even if the accident wasn't your fault. If defects are found, the insurer may well use them to claim that you have voided the terms of your insurance policy and they won't be paying for the repairs. An MOT pass shows your car was roadworthy recently and you take your car's roadworthiness seriously. You can then win the argument over who should pay to put the damage right.
